Quick Links: WebmasterWorld.com | Ajax
For geeks and entrepreneurial types: Like many of you, I’m guilty of taking for granted what a literal treasure trove Webmasterworld.com really is. For those of you not familiar with the site, here’s their mission statement:
This site is a service to the web site administrator community. We are here for WebmasterWorld members to discuss the process of doing business on the internet.
For a taste, I’ve dropped in their RSS feed link at the end of this post.* The feed illustrates the range, breadth and depth of forum topics available which is for me the site’s real value. It’s rare I’ve gone there looking for a solution or answer to some business or tech issue and not found at least a strong lead.
Another example: need to decode some industry jargon in order to skirt the hype and the hard-sell? Checkout the WebmasterWorld Glossary.
We have no commercial affiliation with these guys, just highly recommend ‘em for anyone in the web industry food chain who may not have come across the site yet. (Hint: check out this post from Mr Cutts (…. the blogger ….. the …. blogger ….
) - for how to register for a free account.
Not sure if WMW are thanking him, but well …. Happy Easter.
For coders new to Ajax: looking to get jiggy with this new-fangled Ajax contraption? You could do a lot worse than start with this excellent tutorial titled Nitty Gritty Ajax by Adam DuVander over at Webmonkey. Adam describes Ajax thusly:
In simple speak, Ajax allows us to use JavaScript to grab an XML file (or any other text) without reloading the whole web page.
Ajax has been used for a lot of things, but it is most impressive when many small updates are needed in a short period. Think streaming stock quotes or draggable maps.
